Women in the Workplace

Women in the workplace:

Most people might say, just ask a man.

It’s extremely obvious that women have come a long way being a successful professional and climbing that ladder to reach there. Most men might not want to accept a woman, especially a high powered business woman. The one who climbs the corporate ladder and confidentially with full speed ahead. Although, some women utilize their flirting skills to their advantage to get what they want. Whether it’s for a promotion, a raise, or even for someone else to pay for lunch! With the professional life, most men might feel threatened when dealing with a woman who’s more high powered than them or even a woman who brings more money to the table and one who has it all and is in charge of things as far as being their boss.

For instance: A man might clown a woman who’s over them in the corporate world and just can’t believe that their bosses might be a woman, or even a woman who’s about serious business when running their own companies or even wearing the pants at home with their spouses. Back in the 70′s it took a long time for some men to accept gender equality and realized that somewhere down the line women had just as much the same rights as a man, and with the chauvinists out there, they still believe that women aren’t able to put things together or belong in the workplace but little that they know, times have changed. Anything a man can do, a woman can do it better. Women just don’t belong in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant anymore. More and more women these days are becoming very independent and don’t really need a man to do anything for them as much so they build up a lot of power by taking charge and standing up for what they believe in when in the workplace and not taking anymore nonsense from the men in the workplace especially when dealing with sexual harassment and winning their cases and earning a large lump sum of getting their rights violated. Day by Day more and more women are being heard loud and clear when it comes to dealing with them in the workplace.

Women: Will we stand up for what we believe in when dealing with men at work!

Are men really threatened by women with powerful jobs and positions

Do you think that men are threatened by women with powerful jobs and higher positions than them?

yes, so true because it comes to the conclusion that you have to test your theory when it comes to higher positions than what an average man might have all for the simple fact that most men are intimidated by women who makes more money than them or even hold a higher airtight position and career with lifetime security than they might have.

Newsflash: Ladies, men don’t want a woman who’s got it all but in all actuality the truth to the matter is but when a man asks you what you do for a living, you should let them know, but it’s not about what you say you do, it’s how you say it.

In other words: You should say it where you don’t appear to have a cocky demeanor where the man won’t say Oh my god, she’s acting like she’s all of that, I think I need to just run away.

So don’t scare the man away with your success where they want to run away from you where it’s hard to get them back.

I was dating a guy and we grew up together and we go back 21 years and now that we’ve reunited after all of these years, he says he wants to be with me, but at the same time when he asked me what I do for a living and I say I’m a writer with 2 books published and who also writes news releases, article blogs and do promotions and is well known in the writing industry, he claims he likes it and congratulates me, but to tell you the truth he can’t stop running away from me even though he says he has so much feelings for me and feels sparks when he’s next to me or when we touch.

However, I have mentioned to him that I liked him a lot whether he was less successful than I was or not, he keeps running and avoiding me but hey, what can you do, you win some and you lose some. But if it’s meant to be, we will be together.

But the point I’m trying to make here is that some men just can’t bear the fact that a woman might be more richer than they are in the career department. So therefore, on that note with certain women they will lie and claim another career title just to avoid a nman not running away from them in order to make it work out just lie.

A man I know quoted: a real man isn’t threatened by women with powerful jobs or just aren’t threatened by anything at all.

So when it comes to these issues, women should just keep on doing what they’re supposed to do instead of being around a man who is constantly threatened which is not good at all.

Go figure!!

Women and Empowerment

We, as women, are brought up to be nurturers, to take care of everyone else.
We are so good at reminding our spouse or boyfriend, to call his mother on her birthday, get the perfect gift for his boss, and make sure he doesn’t forget about his doctor appointments. We tell our children to believe in themselves, speak up for themselves and hold their head high. My question is, who does that for us?

As women, we are taught to give and give, to nurture, love, and protect. The other message we receive is that by putting everyone else first we are being unselfish, and are seen as “good” mothers and partners. This is supposed to be positive. On the other hand, if we ask, “what about me?” we are called selfish and ungrateful. Well, I have news for you, ladies … that is not true, that is a lie that our society, ourselves included, have perpetuated. It is not selfish to take care of yourself, it is actually healthy. And the biggest lie ever, is to believe that you can empower your children and have them feel self-confidant, when you deny yourselves the care you need to nurture yourself. Children follow the example of what you do, how you act, and how you treat yourself, not what you say.

High self-esteem and self-confidence, unfortunately does not come automatically with birth, it has to be taught by example or learned through life. Unless you were one of the few fortunate ones, who had parents who knew and practiced unconditional love and support, you were probably raised by parents, who did the best they could, coming from their own childhood of criticism and negativity. How high was their self-esteem?

That is where empowerment comes in. The time is NOW to work on feeling empowered. Many ask me, what do I mean by empowered? I am talking about self-confidence of course, but more than that, it is KNOWING that you can handle it. You have the belief that whatever life throws at you, you will find a way to deal with it. You are resourceful. You are resilient. It is the opposite feeling of powerlessness, helplessness and completely contrary to feeling like a victim or a martyr. It comes from learning to be self-confidant as a result of living through the difficulties and challenges of life. You become not just a survivor, but also victorious and stronger. Empowerment is something we all deserve to feel. It makes us redefine life. We start seeing obstacles as challenges. We see failures as learning experiences, and fear of the unknown, which may have paralyzed us in the past, is now seen as just another obstacle to overcome. Self-confidence gives us the determination and trust that we can get through it. We now know, we have the skills, the capabilities and the belief that nothing can stop us when we have the intention to succeed.

Personal and Professional Development For Professional Women

It is surprising how many professional women are concerned that courses they take should be professional development-based rather than personal. It is as though women are loathe to give themselves the opportunity to grow personally, especially if someone else is paying. The truth is that any personal development you take is going to help your professional development and usually the two are reciprocal.

Understanding this is one of those vital professional women’s issues and it needs addressing. Professional women DO have different needs than men. Women are often battling confidence issues, time-balancing issues and identity issues. We know that women make great leaders, but for so many of us we don’t see it as ourselves personally.

’Professional’ development courses are important for all professional women of course. It is here you develop your skills and knowledge base that are specific to the area you have chosen to work in. The more you can acquire the better equipped you are to be in that pipeline and move on up the ladder. Keeping up to date in your field and improving your skills are vital to on-going success. Professional women who want to keep ahead of the game know this.

What many professional women don’t realize though is that every professional course or bit of training you take affects your personal growth as well. The more skills and knowledge you acquire the more confident you become as a professional. That confidence carries over into every aspect of your life. Adding to your list of ‘I Can’ is wonderful for any woman’s self-esteem.

Personal development for professional women is never a waste of time. The more you grow as a person the more you more you can bring to your professional role. Understanding professional womens issues and understanding your self are transferable skills that you can use anywhere. There are also some personal development courses that can be quite specific to the particular area you work in.

Developing as a person gives confidence, freedom and self-esteem. These are all major professional womens issues that hold so many of us back. Learning to manage your time, learning to be confident, learning to balance your family and working life are all things that make you more productive as a professional. If you are offered any personal development courses – take them.

Finding a balance between professional and personal development courses is something we all need to do. If you are aware that you need one more than the other then tip the scales a little. It is important that we don’t see professional development as giving and personal development as taking. Both are both. Don’t buy into the guilt of thinking that ‘indulging’ in personal development is giving back nothing because it really is. Professional women need personal development to be the best they can.

As women we so often question our own value in both a personal and professional sense. Undertaking both professional and personal development education is empowering and productive.

Lead From the Front Using Famous Leadership Quotes

It’s often said that ‘Leaders are not made, they are born!’ However, it’s not entirely true. In fact, there are two kinds of leaders – the born leaders and those who become leaders by following the leads from other. Moreover, you’ll find that most of the modern leaders belong to the latter category.

In this regard, the leadership quotes from famous personalities attain a pivotal significance. Not only these quotes inspire ordinary mortals to lead from the front, but also keep them in good stead when their leadership skills are tested in real time scenario.

Being a leader of ten marketing professionals in my organization, I can say it authentically that the leadership quotes have brought a welcome change in my personality and played an important role in grooming my leadership skills.

To quote an example, I read a simple but profound leadership quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. on one of the popular quotes website on the Internet. It went something like this “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus”. This was the time when I was struggling to implement an efficient working model within the team but a few old timers were resisting it. I simply gave them a one-week testing challenge whereby they were required to work as per the new plan for a week and assess the results with those achieved by previous methods.

Undoubtedly, when the results were out, the resisters became supporters and have since been among my greatest admirers in the team.

Looking from the hindsight, I can say it from experience that there can’t be a better alternative to the leadership quotes from famous personalities. If anyone is struggling to lead a team or a group, then simply hit the Internet and look for an authentic leadership quotes’ website, and change your fledgling life as a leader.

Starting from the beginning of human civilization women have been regarded as an inferior race among human beings. They have always been treated as slave by the men. They were never given the opportunity to rise up in the society. Those who tried to break this chain and rise up were exterminated. They were always kept suppressed by the men. This foul mentality is prevalent among human beings till today. Women are treated as slave in many countries. They do not get the same privilege as that of men. Women cannot move freely, talk to others freely; moreover, they were not given the permission to do that. Women were bound to listen to the orders of men and they could not deny that. Due to this malpractice prevalent for thousands of years, women forgot what they were. There mentality degenerated totally.

However, this situation is changing nowadays. Various women welfare organizations have come forward for the empowerment of women. They are trying to return back the self respect that women lost hundreds of years ago. Women have forgotten the essence of life; they cannot go out freely nor do any of their personal works freely. All they have to do is follow men’s order. These woman empowerment organizations enlighten women and help them to break free from all these bonding. The woman empowerment program is a huge success for the total mankind. It has brought a massive revolution in our social life. However, getting women back to their original form is not an easy or quick task; it will take a lot of time for doing that. Still the woman empowerment organizations are trying their best. They are trying their best to unleash women’s spirituality.

The main purpose of these organizations is to bring back to their track. For attaining their intended aim the woman empowerment organizations conducts various kinds of refreshment, physical fitness, self healing and self defense programs. Achieving success for changing the whole woman race will never be possible. Betterment of each single woman can be done. But, the problem will exist in the next generation and one after that and so on. Giving proper support to each individual woman and gaining success in that particular case is truly an excellent achievement.

One of the most important programs held in these woman empowerment organizations, is the women conference. During this conference, women can freely discuss their problems and feelings to other women. During, this session they are surrounded by full feminine energy, as a result of which they feel totally free and can reveal the best out of themselves. By attending the organized conferences and participating in the women’s events, women can discover what is buried in them; they can understand their power and qualities, about which they were completely unfamiliar. They can realize the potential and capability of doing any hard work hidden in them and also unleash them and utilize fully.

People often talk about changing the system all over the world. They want to help women from each and every corner of the globe. But, it is to inform them that it is not only hard, but also impossible. Since, it is a very slow process more and more woman empowerment organizations must grow up all over the world for the welfare of women.

Women Entrepreneurship and Changing role of Women

*G.JAYALAKSHMI

Introduction

India is definitely the hub of entrepreneurs worldwide.  Women owned businesses are highly increasing in the economies of almost all countries.  The hidden entrepreneurial potentials of women have gradually been changing with the growing sensitivity to the role and economic status in the society.  Skill, knowledge and adaptability in business are the main reasons for women to emerge into business ventures.

Women” as Entrepreneurs in India:

Women Entrepreneur’ is a person who accepts challenging role to meet her personal needs and become economically independent.  A strong desire to do something positive is an inbuilt quality of entrepreneurial women, who is capable contributing values in both family and social life.

The challenges and opportunities provided to the women of digital era are growing rapidly that the job seekers are turning into job creators.

In India, although women constitute the majority of the total population, the entrepreneurial world is still a male dominated one.  Women in advanced nations are recognized and are more prominent in the business world.  But the Indian women entrepreneurs are facing some major constraints like –

*Ph.D. Scholar, Department of Commerce, Periyar University Salem 11.

To a certain extent, this situation is changing among Indian women and yet to face a tremendous change to increase the rate of growth in entrepreneurship Socio-cultural barriers- women’s family and personal obligations are sometimes a great barrier for succeeding in business career. Only few women are able to manage both home and business efficiently, devoting enough time to perform all their responsibilities in priority. They are not fully aware of the changing market conditions and hence can effectively utilize the services of media and internet. Other factors are family support, Government policies, financial assistance from public and private institutions and also the environment suitable for women to establish business units. This can facilitate women to excel in decision making process and develop a good business network. So the sincere efforts taken towards women entrepreneurs may not reach the entrepreneurs in rural and backward areas. Such programs are really useful to new, rural and young entrepreneurs who want to set up a small and medium scale unit on their own. In spite of the mushrooming growth of associations, institutions, and the schemes from the government side, women are not enterprising and dynamic to optimize the resources in the form of reserves, assets mankind or business volunteers.

Highly educated, technically sound and professionally qualified women should be encouraged for managing their own business, rather than dependent on wage employment outlets.  The additional business opportunities that are recently approaching for women entrepreneurs are:

Eco-friendly technology Bio-technology IT enabled enterprises Event management Tourism industry Telecommunication Plastic materials Vermiculture Mineral water Sericulture Floriculture Herbal & health care Food, fruits & vegetable processing

Technological Innovation:

Innovation is often explained in technical terms-tangible products or processes that result from technological development-there has been a preoccupation with rational, analytical innovation models.  However, a number of industrial studies have shown that for a technological innovation to succeed three important people involved and seven important conditions to satisfy.  The combination of these people and conditions satisfies the need for creativity and implementation. The three key people are:

Creative source: The inventor or originator of the idea that led to the knowledge or vision of something new, the artist of creative endeavor.

The champion:  The entrepreneur or manager who pursues the idea, planning, its implication, acquiring resources, and establishing its markets through persistence, planning, organizing, and leadership.

Sponsor:  The person or organization that makes possible the champion’s activities and the inventor’s dreams through support.  Major countries in Asia are following this technique to acquire the higher position in the world economy.  India, in this sense, is struggling hard.

Women are the important part of development.  No doubt they are taking active participation in the business and industry and doing dual jobs to meet their expenditures.  Women of every level and society (high or low=income countries) hop to work.  So, the rate of women entrepreneurship is high than men.

Rise of Women Entrepreneurs

Economic necessity.  Some women are working full-time and still can’t make ends meet.  With the current strain on the economy having extra money coming in is not an option, its necessity.  Some women are laid-off so being self-employed becomes the best alternative

Solving problems and sharing solutions.

For some women it’s not about the money it’s about solving a problem or sharing a solution.  Inventors usually design new products to solve problems.

Hitting the corporate glass ceiling

Some corporate women feel like they’ve taken their career as far as it will go.  They’re taken their career as far as it will go.  They’re dissatisfied by their options and want a career that will be more fulfilling.  Entrepreneurship is often the answer for these driven women who enjoy being their own boss

Freedom and flexibility

These are the two big reasons for moms, especially moms with young children, to start their won business. They can work from home, choose their own hours and have the flexibility to juggle their work life with their family life.

Women need to have clarity about what drives them and what they want to accomplish with their business. Thankfully with their business.  Thankfully with the rise of women entrepreneurs we can learn from those who have beaten the path before us.

Before you take the Entrepreneurial Leap

Before jumping into entrepreneurship I recommend women take the following steps:

Take time to envision all the details of not only your business, but your entire life as an entrepreneur. Be responsible.  Don’t let go of your day job too quickly.  If money’s tight, carve out specific time to work on your project but keep the cash flow coming in through other sources. It’s not just your venture, it’s your families.  Make sure they buy into what you’re doing and that they’re committed to being supportive. Recognize that being an entrepreneur is not just about what you’re being.  You will need to be committed to your personal growth as a way to keep your business from stagnating. Finally, remember that your success depends on association with other entrepreneurial women with great ideas, and a broader, more creative perspective.

Conclusion

Henceforth, promoting entrepreneurship among women is certainly a short-cut to rapid economic growth and development.  Let us try to eliminate all forms of gender discrimination and thus allow ‘women’ to be an entrepreneur at par with men.

I encourage you to take the time to think about what inspires you.  Do you wake up each morning eager to get started?  If not, it might be time to reanalyze your career choices. If you feel stuck, tap into a broader community of women that are smart, savvy and successful.  These women can help you breakthrough to the next level in your business so you too can be a part of the rise of women entrepreneurs.

For hundred, even thousands of year, women have been successful entrepreneurs.  Our unique mindset, viewpoints, attitudes and skills as women have all contributed to our successes in business.
