To improve your leadership skills and to enhance our communication skills, ways to increase their capacity to be an effective leader.

Did you ever say, “Well, I agree that I think I have bad leadership skills, my co-workers. All I hate my job and I am unable to” hear.

Do not respond at all. They also say any of this because they have poor leadership skills, or do not believe they do not want to appear incompetent. Unfortunately research tells us that the staff perspective, there are many managers out there who have poor leadership skills and communication skills.

What we should take out of this paradox? Perhaps the least, we acknowledge that there ourselves to improve our leadership skills and communication skills to enhance our ability to increase our room can be an effective leader. After all, it’s that kind of skill to get 100% right all of the time is not easy. It might just be that we, especially our leadership skills to us, so here is starting from 10 need not know what can improve:

1. Get a reality check

Finding out what others think of our leadership skills and our communication skills can be real eye-opener and often the most powerful driver for change. A 360 survey where you get feedback from your employees have access to staff and managers, and family sometimes gives you some solid information on an abstract subject. Use an existing tool (and there are some people out there is considered high) or just to let your employees know that you are receiving feedback from them in order to improve their leadership skills.

A word of caution though, do not feel safe in giving feedback to their employees if they believe that you can use it against them, or what they say about what might be going to be defensive. It’s up to you to create a safe environment so they feel comfortable in being open and honest with you is.

2. To use the power of his position do not get things done

People are questioning why certain things done, whether or decision logic, if ever pull rank in response. Buying a critical component of effective leadership skills of your team and colleagues are getting. You do not buy telling them that the decision is right because you’re the boss and you made it your communication skills are extremely important in by. Your team always agree with what is being done, but they do more to respect you if you explain your reasoning is likely to take time.

3. Managed to control things or do not think of employees as needed

Instead, they take action to give latitude to make decisions. Trust is an important component of leadership skills. If you do your job well for the people can not trust, you work either in the wrong people, or you have the right people, but you have not trained adequately. Them what they are there all the time, leaning on their shoulders, or know that they spend every minute of your time without demanding.

4. Listen, listen, listen

Unhappy or disgruntled people in your business, you can guarantee that at some stage to tell you what the problem is they have tried. It is likely you (or did not want to hear) were not listening, or perhaps your initial reaction made the person think twice about bringing this problem. Hear the truth the greatest leadership to develop, regardless of their role is one of skills. Sympathies really good listener, interested and want to find out what’s behind the conversation. Great leaders, great communication skills, without exception.

5. Stop providing solutions

Managers often achieve their positions after being technical experts, or how situations or problems and therefore “right” will be visible on the opinion. They believe that anyone has to say it fast or do it themselves, than to give your employees the opportunity to find out. Always the answer by providing managers and their staff away to learn things to come with the option (and possibly better) ways to take this opportunity.

6. Always – always be creative

Language and communication skills set great leaders apart from mediocre ones. Take full responsibility for how you are heard – protection or do not be critical of others. If you catch yourself about the negative comments, a breath and your words get your message across without the emotional attachment to take rephrase. A great leadership skills and creative ways to always say things to find peace.

7. Judge your success by the success of your team

The real success of a leader that people can be measured by the success of their work. Others as a manager, your main responsibility is to ensure growth and success of your team. If they are successful, you will automatically be successful. Build their skills and focus on removing obstacles in their way. If you can get it, you productivity, motivation and satisfaction of your employees see the results. This in turn filters through to bottom line results.

8. Things just because they “will look good” Do not.

Nothing managers who make decisions and behave only to their superiors look good to have more and more transparent. If you want to improve their leadership skills, integrity is a virtue you need. Integrity to make decisions because they are right, and the integrity to stand up when you really think something is not in the best interest of business. Whether or not it is more in your personal interest is less of an idea.

9. Include in your diet Comedy

No one is an environment that is devoid of any fun, like the work. People are more productive when they are enjoying themselves. A workplace where fun is allowed and encouraged can make a significant difference, and it is even more effective when the boss is away. It increases team spirit, and the people a person, not as simply as the owner to see the rewards.

10. Are real people you know

Being open about yourself to break down the barriers that hierarchy puts in place helps. Trust and respect – when your staff an excuse, that’s when you start building the foundation of good leadership to know the person behind.

Management Is Only Leadership When You Lead By Example

The best side to learn leadership from is not the management side, but the employee side of the manager/employee relationship; for by being forced-fed an education about management from management, you often learn the wrong tenets and greed driven philosophy other detached managers want you to know, whereas learning leadership from the employee side drives you passionately to learn what not to do from the pain of experiencing bad management practices.

The first thing I learned about management from my experience as a trainer is that most managers are poor leaders. This is not entirely because of their lack of passion or desire; but it has more to do with the lack of time that front line managers have to learn correct leadership principles. For the most part, managers or supervisors are thrown into their given roles and expected to perform with little training involved and once they are in their roles they are caught-up in the madness of the “machine” driven by unreasonable demands to meet targeted results from out-of-touch C.E.O’s or company heads, resulting in managers playing a catch-up game in which they never get caught-up. In fact, most management or supervision is so far removed from what true leadership is that a book could be written on the subject entitled, “Managers are from Mars, and Leaders are from Venus”.

The most important quality which stands in glaring contrast from the two groups is the quality of leading by example. In fact today’s quote featured on our website, http://cyreousquotes.com is something Albert Schweitzer once said. Eloquent in its simplicity the saying goes, “Example is Leadership!”

If you want to teach an employee good working habits for example, you can elect to draw up a list of things for that employee to do. Heck, you can put your employees all in a room for a day and cover the material and call it training if you wish; but that is not going to get the best results. That is tantamount to telling your teenagers what to do. You see how far that has gotten don’t you? Telling people what to do just doesn’t work. Here is what will work – leading by example. Instead of always beating that drum about attendance, weather it is showing up late for work or missing days, set the example yourself by being the first one in and the last to leave each day and don’t miss a single day from work. You heard me, you can’t miss a single day.

Herein lies the explanation as to why many managers don’t succeed; it is because doing what they say and saying what they mean seems too difficult. You can’t miss a day? That’s right! The only way your leadership will work is if you can prove it can be done. You see most of American doesn’t believe you can have perfect attendance; which is why attendance is the #1 cause of employee termination in this country. It is the single biggest problem leading to a company’s lack of performance, customer service breakdown, lost profits, communication problems and a whole lot of other related problems. Because of this, attendance is the #1 issue with employers.

Don’t think that just because you haven’t been spoken to yet that your boss hasn’t noticed your missed days, or showing up 15 minutes late every morning, or leaving early before your shift ends. Believe me when I say this, as sure as the sun rises each day supervisors know precisely when you are not there and they have duly noted your lack of enthusiasm for the job. For most employees, the subject is never brought up when they are fired. Other excuses are offered and employees never learn that it was their attendance that was the issue that led to their termination

For this reason I always counsel workers to go beyond the call of duty. Give the employer more than they expect. Wow them! If you keep a perfect attendance record, I guarantee that you will impress your employer. Your example will be one of a leader and in affect you will be acting in the role of a manager by doing what a manager ought to. Your raises and promotions will come quicker than most and your new position of power will give you the opportunity to lead others by example.

This applies to every aspect of life, no just work. If you are a spouse, your leadership is needed. If you are a parent your leadership is needed. You see in many homes the duality of the dysfunctional families when parents tell their kids to say no to drugs, but they do this while they are puffing on a cigarette or drinking a martini. The cliché “Do as I say, not as I do” is far too well known. This is not leadership. You must lead by example if you expect success.

Today as you take on the world, remember that you are a leader. As a leader you must lead by example. Remember Schweitzer’s easy-to-remember words, “Example is leadership!” If you do and you practice it you will be empowered and you will succeed! Take that to the bank!

Do Your Managers Need Leadership Skills Training?

All businesses today recognise the importance of good management that is based on firm and basic management skills-but how are these managers taught what are good leadership skills? Previously before the advent of training courses managers were expected to know the principles of good management and practise them with little in the way of assessment or training to ensure that all managers met certain standards. This would inevitably lead to inconsistencies in how leadership was practised and also result in poor practises being the norm-something which is not acceptable in the workplace of today.

If a business wants to have the best management and team leaders it is vital that they all possess excellent leadership skills such as the ability to work with people, to motivate others, provide negative and positive feedback, encourage their teams to strive for their targets as well as other aspects of the role. These are attributes that are not always inherent in a person and in order to provide a management structure that is positive and objective lead leader skills training can be a huge benefit.

Leadership skills courses can tend to be ‘hit and miss’ there are many company’s out there who will tell you that their leadership courses are the best and get many delegates this way, but who can you trust to deliver what they say? Any business that is looking to create a team of managers that have outstanding leadership skills which make them a credit to that business it is important that the training courses they attend build upon their existing skills and develop new ones. To be able to do this successfully training courses should be not only designed to include the objectives, vision and beliefs of the but also be cost effective and delivered in a timely fashion.

One way of doing this is to have an on-site training department that is responsible for training all employees but for the majority of small to medium sized businesses this is simply not a viable option as it is too costly. Instead it makes more sense financially and in terms of time spent training to use the services of an outside company to provide all your training needs. Deciding on the company that provides your leadership training can be difficult, so it is important to look to a company that will take the time to tailor a training course for your business and be on hand after the course to provide ‘after care’ for any questions or queries that delegates may have.

Premier Training are a training company that go out of their way to provide leadership training that is cost effective, efficient and gets you the results that you want for your management team. This is done by creating leadership skills training courses that are in line with the needs and requirements of your business and totally relevant, thanks to communication between the training planner at Premier Training (who is not a salesperson but a training expert) and yourself the business owner. Tell Premier Training your needs and they will develop a leadership Training course that is right for you.

The ABC’s Of Leadership

A recent new study by the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and U.S. News & World Report (September 2006) reports that 70% of folks in the U.S believe there is a leadership crisis in America. So do I!

If you had ‘Googled’ the word ‘leadership as I did in January 2007 when preparing to write my first book you would have gotten 163 million references on the Internet. If you had ‘Googled’ ‘fol¬lowership’ at that same time you got 192,000… a little over one-tenth of the sites for leadership. We have a fascination for leader¬ship and how it is to be executed. We used to believe that leaders were born not made. In recent decades we have come to know differently. The fact is that because leaders are at the pinnacle of organizations they are expected to somehow magically (and single-handedly) lead their organizations to greatness.

There have been almost innumerable studies and research on what makes leaders successful. As a senior level HR executive for many years I have personally drawn upon this vast array of research to help coach and counsel lots of leaders in corporations on how to improve their game. What I learned over the years is that, like everything in life, the answers can often be complex but the solutions can be quite simple if the individual is willing to learn more about themselves, their colleagues and the organiza¬tions they serve.

A very good friend of mine, Ken Hampton, a Senior Vice President with the Waco Chamber of Commerce has a great perspective about leader-ship:

“A great leader is one that sees himself as a steward of the resources and lives that he’s been tasked with achieving the defined business results.

My idea of leadership is emphasizing collaboration, trust, empathy, and the ethical use of power. The leader is a servant first, making conscious decisions to lead because he wants to serve the enterprise and individuals rather than be absorbed in driving his own need for power.

A great leader enhances the growth of individuals in the organization to increase teamwork and personal involvement to drive effective business results.

To be a great leader you have to be a great follower. Even more importantly, a great leader sees himself as the same as those he leads. No one is more important than the other, they just have different roles.

Leadership employs vision, principles, and commitment to drive great behavior, teamwork, results and experiences for those of which he’s been privileged to serve under his leadership.”

A New York Times study in 2001 revealed 25% of employees reported being driven to tears in the workplace. 50% of workers are calling their place of work a place of “verbal abuse” and “yell¬ing”. 30% of workers believe they are regularly given unrealistic deadlines and half of them report that they have to work 12 hour days to get the work done.

The Harvard Business Review estimates that ‘presenteeism’ (workers who come to work but aren’t productive at all) costs in America to be at 0 billion annually. The Gallup Organiza¬tion studies say that as much as 30% of the average workforce is “actively disengaged”!

My take on what this means is just this…if an employee is actively disengaged they are not only not working for you, they are deliberately working against the goals and ob¬jectives of your organization!

It has also been my experience that employees will undermine the organization (if only in an inno¬cent way) until leadership address the dysfunction. My question is what are organizational leaders doing about this? Do they even know about it? Overwhelming stats like these are a clear call for better leadership.

My personal experience in working for some of the finest or¬ganizations in the world is that there is no magic bullet that will instantly work for everyone. In fact, every leader is different, and the skills and competencies each needs to work on will be dif¬ferent.

There is an array of factors that spell success for organi¬zations and their leaders. However, almost all of the skills and competencies for great leadership can usually be agreed upon.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”
— Leonardo Da Vinci
Leadership is designed to be simple and therefore easy to learn and apply.

I challenge you to ask yourself questions… lots and lots of questions about your experiences with leadership, your orga¬nization’s effectiveness in light of your leadership, and what new level of performance can be achieved if you focused on it for just a moment. I hope you will find those questions provocative and insightful. Use those moments to help develop a plan of action to succeed as a leader.
