Successful entrepreneurs know that in the process of building a business, leadership skills is not an option, it is a must. As an entrepreneur, developing your leadership skills is all about developing your mindset and the way you handle people or situations.

I want to share with you few tips that can help you improve your leadership skills but before i do, let me tell you why leadership skill is a necessity.

As an entrepreneur, i see myself as the pilot of a plane. The crew and passengers represent my employees, customers and investors. All of them are relying on me to pilot them to the promise land. If you can see the picture i am trying to paint, then you will realize the importance of developing not only your leadership skills but your business skills in general.

Now how do you develop leadership skills?

The first thing you need to work on to develop the skills is your attitude towards failure. How you react in the face of failure will determine how strong your leadership skills will be.

Successful entrepreneurs don’t accept the word called “failure.” They don’t see failure; they only see an opportunity to learn something new from their mistakes. For me, i don’t fail. I make mistakes and experience few setbacks but i don’t see myself as a failure. One of my mentors, Henry Ford says it all. “Failure is just a resting place. It is just an opportunity to begin again more intelligently”

So if you are going to be a great leader in business, you must change your perception and mindset towards failure. Don’t run and hide when you make a mistake. Don’t blame others, face your mistakes squarely and learn something. Remember, mistakes are great learning tools.

The second key to developing your leadership skills is self control. In the word of business and leadership, self control is omnipotent. If you lack self control, forget about leadership and forget about being in business. How can you control your employees, customers and investors when you can’t control yourself?

Nobody is going to follow a leader who has no control over himself, so take note.

The third key to look at is your personal standard. Successful entrepreneurial leaders are known to have high self imposed personal standard. To this set of entrepreneurs, their integrity is worth more than the money. So if you want to lead in business, you must be firm. You must never compromise your standard.

In your service to customers, you must not compromise quality in the name of increasing profit. Quality will surely payback in the form of customer’s loyalty.

Next on the line is your appearance. We can’t talk about developing leadership skills without including appearance or outlook. If you are going to be a leader that employees and investors will follow, then your outlook should speak leadership. Your charisma should be bold and appealing so that when you talk, people will listen.

Even in the face of criticism, your facial appearance should display a high level of confidence. Keep your fears to yourself and talk positive.

The fifth key to developing your leadership skills is to develop your communication skill. Great leaders are great communicators. To be a great leader in business, you must learn how to effectively communicate with your employees, customers and investors. In fact, communication skill is so essential that its importance can never be over emphasized. Now let me ask:

How can you raise capital to start a business if you cannot communicate or sell your ideas to investors?

How can you convince a customer that your product is of highest quality when you cannot communicate?

How can you inspire your employees to be the best and achieve greatness when you cannot communicate?

I believe with these questions, you will come to realize that communication is very vital in world of leadership and business in general.

In conclusion, it is important you know that businesses and investors are looking for strong leaders with business skills to pilot their business and grow their money respectively. Before i rest my pen, i will leave you with this word of wisdom.

“Leaders don’t do great things. They inspire others to do great things.”

4 Ways to Empower Your Staff Through Leadership Training

“Empowerment” is a key word whenever you go to any human resources conference these days. However, it takes more than bandying about the word to empower your staff. The essence of empowering your staff is to provide a facilitative style of leadership that enables you build up and encourage individual staff members to reach their full potential. This leads to many benefits for the company including higher staff morale, increased productivity, reduction in leave, and reduction in staff turnover.

Your role, as a leader in this process, is to ensure your team has:

A clear understanding of their boundaries
Access to the information required to make confident decisions
The ability and skills needed to work in smaller, self managed teams

As part of this strategy leadership training can be the key to empower individuals and team members to tap into their full potential.

Personal Empowerment

When you send an individual to a good leadership training course, you provide that person with the opportunity to learn personal development skills. Since good leaders must understand the intricacies of interpersonal communication and learn how to motivate team members, the leadership training course will enable individuals to learn a range of skills that will allow them to better communicate on a number of different levels.

An individual attending a leadership training course will learn what their own personal motivation for working is and will learn how to self-motivate to achieve their goals. These communication skills and increased motivation are useful to individuals in whatever role they have within the organization. Individuals who undertake leadership training become more self-aware, empowering the individual to put those new communication skills into practice on the return to the workplace.

Building Team Skills

One of the ‘hidden’ benefits of sending an individual staff member to a leadership training course is the difference it can make to team communication practices. Leaders learn how to appreciate other people’s contributions to team projects and how to encourage individuals to give their best performance to each task.

Even if an individual does not take on a leadership role within the team, the training will open his or her eyes to the contributions of others within the team. This understanding can encourage greater team harmony and the willingness to work together to achieve the goals of the organization.

Team Empowerment

When you send several team members to a leadership training course, you will find that the entire team becomes empowered. Increased skills in working together are derived through such things as:

The leadership skills of appreciating another’s contributions
Enhanced interpersonal communication skills
The ability to motivate others to achieve

The entire team or department can benefit from the increased understanding and reduction in miscommunication that arises when people learn interpersonal communication skills through leadership training. If you want to empower your team to move past a “storming” phase and get into productive work faster, you need several people on the team with a range of skills that will build up and encourage the team to succeed as a unit.

Leadership Empowerment

Finally, sending your team members to leadership training can have many benefits for you as a manager. If you have people who have some leadership skills working with you, it is easier to delegate tasks and share the burdens. You may not need to facilitate as many team sessions, or could find that the team is able to work productively without your continual input, as the team members become empowered to take on a range of leadership tasks themselves.

As a manager, you have many roles within the organization and delegating some of the tasks involved in leading a department can ensure you have time to attend to other important tasks too.

Leadership training empowers individuals, benefits the team, and provides easier delegation for leaders and managers. Everyone in the department wins when individuals become empowered through leadership training.

Organisations Fail Because of Poor Leadership. Failed Leaders are the Result of Poor Recruitment

I think you’ll agree there is greater awareness these days of management incompetence. Not a week goes by without the business press reporting another large local or overseas company in trouble.

Right now we are seeing a lot of business commentary on the failure of finance companies, along with scathing accusations on the competence of their leaders. In most cases, this is highly justified. I can say this with confidence as I have personally been burnt by four of them!

I don’t think managers today are any more incompetent than they were when I entered the workforce. There is a consensus (Hogan 2007) that the increased use of climate surveys by organisations has given a greater voice for workers to highlight poor management processes.

The old saying, “The buck stops at the top” is so true. Organisations that are struggling usually have an incompetent leader. An article in a recent edition of the Harvard Business Review places the blame fairly and squarely on the shoulder of the people involved in the hiring process – usually the board of directors.

This led renowned business writer Ram Charan to quip, “It’s interesting to observe the length company directors go to doing due diligent on impending company buy-outs or mergers, yet they usually place the fate of these acquisitions in the hands of people who were appointed on a handshake.”

Fernandez and Araoz (1999) attribute executive failure, and indeed organisational collapse, on the initial recruitment process of its leader. They outline “Ten Deadly Traps” company boards (or the chairperson) fall into during the executive selection process:

1. Trying to replicate the person who just left.
2. Not being clear what the job to be filled actually is.
3. Choosing the candidate based on his or her response to your favourite questions.
4. Taking interview answers at face value.
5. Believing the reports of referees and not doing a thorough background check.
6. Hiring someone who is just like you.
7. Allowing junior personnel, or a recruitment agent to run the hiring process.
8. Hiring the person using an unstructured interview.
9. Ignoring or failing to check “under the waterline” – a psychometric profile to check personality attributes and mental ability.
10. Members of the selection committee hiring in a weaker candidate to enhance their own chances of getting ahead.

The above seems to make common sense given the criticism of the interview process. Serious flaws of personality and character coexist quite nicely with excellent social skills. About the only thing an unstructured selection interview can evaluate is social skill (Hogan 2007).

The literature is very clear that personality and leadership are closely connected – who you are determines how you lead – and the standard measures of normal personality characteristics are robust predictors of leadership performance (Hogan 2007).

So the next time you read, hear or view a commentary on an organisation in trouble take a close look at the leadership. Do you think the leader is falling short on any of Elmer’s (2003) key themes of leadership success?

- The ability to maintain self control
- They treat others with respect irrespective of the person’s level in the organisation.
- The ability to build, motivate and maintain a team(s) to a common goal.
- The ability to assert control of others to the right degree, in the right amount, at the right time.
- Integrity

It is a very easy task to translate the above themes into a language of personality and link these to specific job competencies – that is exactly what the ASSESS psychometric platform does.

In summary, failing companies are usually driven by incompetent leaders who are hired by boards of directors who fail to adhere to a structured selection process and don’t check “below the waterline”. They place all their selection weight on the candidate’s knowledge, experience and skill to lead their organisation – can they do the job?

But the bigger burning question is, “How will they do the job?” A validated psychometric assessment will answer this question. Hiring directors usually defer to gut feel in this department. First impressions can be dangerous. Just because the person is outward going, exudes self-confidence, is articulate and well presented doesn’t mean they will be exceptional leaders. It does however tell you that they are very good at interviews, and let’s face it, this is the very best you are going to see in this person.

If the candidate doesn’t have the personality, mental ability, values and motives of a leader the directors will be placing their company in the hands of another failing executive.

Laws on Leadership

Laws of Leadership

I have already written 2 articles on leadership. The more I read books and hear audio cassettes, the more I would like to know about leadership. The more I come to know about leadership, the more I would like to share with my colleagues.

Leaders are made, not born. You become a leader in your business in the world around you by practicing the qualities, attributes and behaviors of leaders who have gone before you. Like any set of skills, leadership is developed by practice, perseverance and repetition, over and over again, until you master it without being weary.

The Laws of Leadership have been identified and discussed over and over throughout the centuries. They are taught in military schools, colleges and education institutions. They are taught in business schools and practiced every day in the businesses and organizations of our society. These laws and principles are followed by men and women everywhere who emerge to assume positions of power and authority whenever the situations demand it.

The more you get to know about the laws of leadership and the more you deliberately make an attempt to exercise the qualities of leadership in small matters, the more you will be given an opportunity to be a leader in larger matters. The better you fulfill your responsibilities today, right where you are, the greater the responsibilities that will be entrusted to you in the future. It is in your hands. LET US FOLLOW THE LAWS OF LEADERSHIP.

• The Law of Integrity.

GREAT BUSINESS LEADERSHIP IS CHARACTERIZED BY HONESTY, TRUTHFULNESS, AND STRAIGHT DEALING WITH EVERY PERSON, UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES.

Integrity lies at the core of leadership, at the heart of the leader. Everything you do revolve around the person you really are inside. And the person you really are inside is always remonstrated by your actions, the things you do and say.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Resolve to live in truth with yourself and with every person and situation in life. Listen to your body and trust your intuition. Identify the main stress points and people problems in your life and then ask yourself, What is the right thing to do in this situation to resolve this problem and alleviate this stress?

Ask yourself: What kind of a company would my company be if everyone in it was just like me? What personal habits or behaviors would you need to change to answer this question in the affirmative? Whatever they are, do something today toward becoming the very best person you can be.

• The Law of Courage.

THE ABILITY TO MAKE DECISIONS AND ACT BOLDLY IN THE FACE OF SETBACKS AND ADVERSITY IS THE KEY TO GREATNESS IN LEADERSHIP.

Leadership is not lack of fear or absence of fear. Leadership is control of fear-mastery of fear. Everyone is afraid; leaders are simply those who face their fears and take action in spite of their fears. And you develop the habit of courage by acting courageously whenever the situation is called for.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Imagine that you could wave a magic wand and achieve any goal you set for yourself. What actions would you take in your business, what changes would you make, if you had no fear of failure at all? What goals would you set if you were guaranteed success? Whatever the answers to these questions, begin acting today as though your success were guaranteed.

Identify a specific fear in your life, such as public speaking or confronting others, that may be holding you back from realizing your full potential. Whatever it is, resolve today to deal with it and overcome it. As Dorothea Brande wrote, “Act as if it were impossible to fail, and it shall be!”

• The Law of Realism.

LEADERS DEAL WITH THE WORLD AS IT IS, NOT AS THEY WISH IT WOULD BE.

Your ability and your willingness to be completely realistic in your life and work are among the most important qualities of leadership. Concentrate on getting the facts. Facts don’t lie. The more facts you gather, the better will be the picture of reality that you can develop. The quality of your decisions will largely determined by the quality of the information on which those decisions are based.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Identify your major weaknesses, in terms of either personality traits or specific skills. What is your weakest personal quality? What is your weakest important skill? Whatever they are, identify them clearly and then make a plan to correct them.

Identify and analyze the realities of your company, your products, your services, and your methods of operation, as they are today. What are the weaknesses or areas of vulnerability in your business? Whatever they are, decide today to take some specific action to compensate for your weaknesses and to maximize your strengths.

• The Law of Power.

POWER GRAVITATES TO THE PERSON WHO CAN USE THE MOST EFFECTIVELY TO GET THE DESIRED RESULTS.

Power is the ability to influence the allocation of people, money, and resources. It exists in all human relationships and situations. It is essential for the effective functioning of human life and society. It is neither good nor bad. It just is.

There are four kinds of power you can develop. The first is expert power. The second type of power you can develop is personal power. The third type of power, position power, is the power that goes with the job title. The fourth is ascribed power. This is the power you have when the people around you willingly grant you authority and influence over them because of the person you are.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Identify the individual in your organization who have power of one kind or another-expert power, position power, personal power, or ascribed power. What are some of the things that you could do personally to develop your power in one or more of these areas?

Define the most important results expected of you in your position. How could you increase the quality and quantity of your results? Identify one thing that you could do differently right now to be more effective.

• The Law of Ambition.

LEADERS HAVE AN INTENSE DESIRE TO LEAD; THEY HAVE A CLEAR VISION OF A BETTER FUTURE, WHICH THEY ARE DETERMINED TO REALIZE.

People may work steadily for a paycheck, but they will perform at high levels only when they are inspired by a vision of some kind. The development and articulation of this vision is a key responsibility of leadership.

Most of all, leaders want to lead, to be in charge, to be responsible, to make things happen. They are willing to endure the risks and the sacrifices that are required to make a real difference in their worlds.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Determine a clear vision for yourself and your organization. Where would you ideally like to be in three to five years from now? Define it clearly. Write it down, share it with others. The more clear and specific you are about your future vision for yourself and your organization, the more you will accomplish and the better and more effective leader you will become.

Decide what it is that you really want to do with your life. This is the great question of leadership. If you had no limits whatsoever in terms of time, money, and resources, what would you be the most excited about achieving for yourself and your organization? Begin today to think in terms of how you can accomplish it, and then take action on it immediately.

• The Law of Optimism.

THE TRUE LEADER RADIATES THE CONFIDENCE THAT ALL DIFFICUTIES CAN BE OVERCOME AND ALL GOALS AND CHALLENGES CAN BE ATTAINED.

Difficulties come not to obstruct, but to instruct. You can become an irrepressible optimist by practicing the habit of optimism whenever they are called for. Optimism is the ability to find something worthwhile in every situation. It has been best defined as “a generally positive and constructive response to stress.”

The only things you can control in your life are your responses to the inevitable problems and difficulties you face each day. How you respond to a situation; or how you interpret the situation, determines how you feel about it. Your feelings, your emotions, then determine the clarity and effectiveness of your thoughts and your responses. The more optimistic and positive you are the calmer, more positive, and the more creative you will be.

How can you apply this law immediately?

List your three most important goals in life, right now. Then, write down one step that you can take immediately to move you in the direction of each of those goals. This simple exercise will give you an increased sense of control and personal power.

List your three biggest worries for today. Decide on at least one specific action you can take in each case to begin solving the problem or resolving the worry or concern.

Identify the most valuable lesson that could be contained in the biggest single problem you are wrestling with right now. When you begin to identify and capitalize on the lessons contained in every difficulty you face, you will begin to move ahead at a more rapid rate than ever before.

• The Law of Empathy.

LEADERS ARE SENSITIVE TO AND AWARE OF THE NEEDS, FEELINGS, AND MOTIVATIONS OF THOSE THEY LEAD.

Leaders have high levels of “interpersonal intelligence.” They are constantly aware of the thoughts, feelings, and possible reactions of others to the things they do and say. They take time to think about the effects of their decisions on their people before they make them. They recognize that how people feel will largely determine how well they perform.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Make a list of the people who report to you and then consider the kind of direction and supervision they need from you to perform at their best. How could you adjust your leadership style to be more effective with each of them?

Be a good and aggressive listener. Practice asking more questions of your people and then listening quietly and attentively to the answers. Remember that you do not need to comment or to reply to everything that people say. You only need to listen well.

Ask the people around you for their advice, ideas, and input. Encourage people to be open and direct with you. Think of how you could improve your relationships with your people by being more relaxed and receptive to the different ideas and viewpoints they might have.

• The Law of Resilience.

LEADERS BOUNCE BACK FROM THE INEVITABLE SETBACKS, DISAPPOINTMENTS, AND TEMPORARY FAILURES EXPERIENCED IN THE ATTAINMENT OF ANY WORTHWHILE GOAL.

Life is a continuous succession of problems and difficulties. There is no success without temporary failure. Setbacks and disappointments are inevitable and unavoidable. Your ability to respond positively and constructively to adversity will prove how far you have come as a person. Keep reminding yourself, “It’s not how far you fall, but how high you bounce, that counts!”

How can you apply this law immediately?

Identify the three worst things that could go wrong in your business life, your job, or your career. Develop a contingency plan for each one. Imagine that what can go wrong, will go wrong and begin making provisions against possible problems immediately.

Engage in “crisis anticipation” regularly, looking down the road and imagining the problems that could occur. Discuss the subject with others. Brainstorm different countermeasures you could take in the case of any eventuality.

Identify the major source of worry or stress in your life today. What is it? Now, ask. What is the worst possible outcome of this situation? Once you have determined the worst possible outcome, begin immediately to make sure that it does not happen.

• The Law of Independence.

LEADERS KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN, AND THEY THINK FOR THEMSELVES.

Leaders tend to be independent in their thinking. They are very clear about their values, their goals, and their personal missions. They are clear about what they stand for and believe in. They don’t deviate from their values for any reason, especially the core values of integrity and responsibility.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Decide for yourself what you really like and enjoy. What activities make you feel the very best about yourself? How could you organize your work so that you are doing more of these activities more often?

Be clear about your most important values and beliefs. Decide exactly what you believe in and what you stand for. Then make sure that everything you do is consistent with your highest values and your innermost convictions.

• The Law of Emotional Maturity.

LEADERS ARE CALM, COOL, AND CONTROLLED IN THE FACE OF PROBLEMS, DIFFICULTIES, AND ADVERSITY.

Leaders recognize that all you can do is your best. If a situation doesn’t work out, then so be it. You do not go into fits of anger or recrimination when things go against you. You have a calm, healthy view of yourself. You can strive for higher goals and objectives, yet accept failure along the way.

Emotional maturity requires that you like and respect yourself. You have a positive self-image. You are able to endure the criticism and disapproval of other people without being bothered too much. You are able to do without either appreciation or rewards if they don’t come immediately.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Think of the biggest challenges or difficulties facing you today. Ask questions to keep control, both of your emotions and of the situation. Some of the best questions are: What exactly has happened? What is the true situation? How did it occur? What do you think we should do? What is the next step?

Refuse to criticize, complain or condemn, no matter what happens. Imagine that this difficult situation has been artificially created to test you, to see what you are truly made of. Act as if everyone is watching to see how you handle the problem and as if your future prospects are going to be determined by how calmly and relaxed you behave.

• The Law of Superb Execution.

LEADERS ARE COMMITTED TO EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE OF THE BUSINESS TASK AT HAND AND TO CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.

Leaders set standards of excellence for everyone who reports to them. They are ruthless about weeding out incompetence and poor performance. Leaders demand quality work and insist that people do their jobs well. They have punishing schedules and derive thrill and happiness by setting high standards for themselves and completing the assigned tasks.

Leaders identify their core competencies, the vital tasks they do that are responsible for them being in business. They continually look for ways to upgrade these core competencies to assure that they maintain a competitive edge in the market place.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Identify your personal “area of excellence.” What is that you do exceptionally well that makes you uniquely valuable to your organization? What should it be? What could it be?

Identify your personal core competencies. What are the essential skills of your job, the abilities that make you valuable, if not indispensable? What core competencies do you need to acquire if you want to be the best in your field in the years ahead? Make a plan today to develop the key skills and core competencies you need tomorrow.

• The Law of Foresight.

LEADERS HAVE THE ABILITY TO PREDICT AND ANTICIPATE THE FUTURE.

Foresight is the ability to analyze the current situation and to accurately predict what is likely to happen as a result. The best leaders are those who continually look down the road and prepare carefully for possible reversals well in advance of them taking place.

How can you apply this law immediately?

Look into the future and imagine the most exciting opportunities that could occur for you in the next few years. How could you begin preparing today to take advantage of them?

Identify the greatest difficulties or reversals that could take place in the next one, two, or three years. What could you do today to make sure they don’t happen?

CONCLUSION.

Leaders are made, not born. They are usually self-made, as the result of long, hard work on themselves. And everyone has leadership qualities waiting to be developed.

Leadership emerges in response to situations that require the very best you have to offer. When you think like a leader and behave like a leader, when you accept the mantle of responsibility without making excuses, blaming, looking to others, or running for cover, you become a leader.

AND THE WHOLE WORLD OPENS UP TO YOU.

Which Type Of Leadership Program Is Right For Your Company?

April 19, 2008 by jeff · Leave a Comment

An effective leadership program will invest time and money in persons within the company that display true potential in upper management positions.  Hundreds of programs exist in the market today that promise that your super motivated shining star will emerge and never stop.  Doesn’t sound very realistic does, it?

Given the proper training and guidance, a leadership prospect will be ready to take on increased responsibility and success as each week passes.  What does it mean to have an effective program to train these individuals?  Many companies offer different strategies for this purpose.  Let us visit a few.

The first type of leadership program provides videos, group discussions, workshops, case studies and lectures from current leadership within your company.  This can be highly effective in a small business situation as there is naturally a smaller team of people and it is fairly easy for upper management to coach their future leader and keep the momentum up.

The next type of program trains off site.  By training off site, outside leaders and those proven effective in upper management are the individuals who facilitate the training.  They begin with the typical video and group discussions then move on to a progressive intensity.  Personality tests are then done for fun and education with the result of the future manager knowing themselves and what type of leader they will probably be.  When they understand this, the training can intensify and focus on their strengths and combat their weaknesses to alleviate potential downfall.

Lastly, the same basis for training begins.  Involving the lectures, videos, group discussions, personality tests and focus on strengths and weaknesses.  Then comes the sharing of research, involving leveraging your leadership training for a competitive edge.  The facilitator explorers how to apply value, sense of urgency, moral leadership, and sustainability within a team.  All the while expecting an outstanding performance record for them.  How is this generally done?  By acting out specific, documented scenarios that face any organization, proper resolution and agreement among parties, how to delegate, how to properly manage persons you had given a task to without being a micro manager.  The idea behind this super charged training package is that the individual obtains the most intense and specific guidance and follow through so that the end result with the company is a valued, respected and highly educated leader that will raise the value of the organization in which they work.

Car Insurance For Young Women

Looking for a cheap and low-budget car insurance for young women can be very rough. It was very hard for me to find a low-cost car insurance for young women quote that I can be happy with. I had searched just about everywhere I possibly can to get the better rates feasible. I even went as far as to pick up the big yellow pages book to look for better insurance rates.

Unfortunately I was very disappointed every time I got my quotes because they ended up giving me higher rates than I had expected. There was no reason for them to give me high car insurance rates.

I then decided to try a couple alternatives that had not tried before. One option I decided to try was to go through a local agent in my area. Even though my agent was kind of busy he was able to get me quotes within a fair amount of time.  But I still was not happy with the quotes that the agent had gave me.  That’s when I realized that I’ll never really be able to get low car insurance quotes by going through a local agent.

All I really needed was a cheaper car insurance for young women rate.  I got tired of the run around and decided to go online to look for cheap quotes. I eventually came to find out that signing up to each and every single site took too much of my valuable time.  Even though I had to do a lot of typing, I was able to get the rates that I wanted.  That’s when I stumbled upon some motorcar insurance website that gave me insurance quotes from as many as 5 companies at once.

This proved to be a great time saver for me.  I used this to my advantage by going to these type of web sites right before my car insurance premium was to expire.

Women And Working From Home

April 17, 2008 by jeff · Leave a Comment

These days we are finding more and more women giving up a corporate career and becoming home based business owners! So why do so many women prefer working from home these days? Here are just a few reasons that make working at home better than working a regular 9 to 5 job.

1. Make More Money:

Yes, you can definitely earn a better income working from home in your own home-based business. Of course, it will take some time to learn what you need to learn, and you may not earn so much in the beginning. But once you figure out your niche, you can make unlimited income. Some women believe that working from home automatically means they have to take a pay cut. That is totally not true! A business based out of your home can allow you to earn more money than you ever thought possible and you can do it your own way.

2. Have More Time:

When you work from home in your own home based business, you eliminate many things that are normally time wasters in a regular job. For example, office politics, writing memos, unnecessary meetings, driving to and from work, etc. Most work-at-home women find that they can get all of their work done in less time than when they are at an office working as an employee. Think about how nice it would be to make a full-time income while working only part-time. There is no law that says that you have to work 8 hours a day to earn a full-time income.

3. Have More Freedom:

This is absolutely one of the best things about working from home. You can take a vacation whenever you want and work whenever you want. As long as you are producing, it does not matter when or how you work. Your life is really YOUR life, which is something that a job can rarely offer you.

4. You Can Be Your Own Boss:

When you work from home in your own home based business, you have the best boss in the whole world, you! Even if you like your boss now there is nothing like being in control of your own career, time and destiny. No office politics, no deadlines to meet, when you’re the CEO of your own business, you make the rules!

5. You Can Be At Home:

Maybe the best benefit of working from home is actually being at home. Doesn’t matter if you are a woman re-entering the work force, a single woman who wants to work from home or you’re a mom who wants to work from home while raising your kids.

Now you may be thinking, sure these are great benefits. But how do I get started with my own home business? I know nothing about a business done from home. What can I sell? These are valid concerns and questions. But businesses based out of people’s homes are started every day. You just have to start thinking like an entrepreneur and figure out what your strengths are and use those strengths to make things work for you. You also may want to look at Network Marketing or MLM, which allows you to start a home-based business without any significant investment and offers you unlimited income potential.

Maxwell House: An American Institution

It started in 1892 when a coffee blend that Joel Cheek came up with for the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee became so popular that the hotel owner allowed no other coffee to be served to his guests. The special blend soon came to be known as Maxwell House coffee.

Years later, specifically on August 27, 1901, Joel Cheek and John Neal, his partner, decided to form the Nashville Coffee and Manufacturing Company and started producing Maxwell House coffee even to non-guests. The company was later renamed the Cheek-Neal Coffee Company.

1907 saw the birth of the legend that President Theodore Roosevelt, while on a visit to “The Hermitage” home of Andrew Jackson in Nashville, Tennessee, was served a cup of Maxwell House coffee. His comments became catch phrase for Maxwell House coffee that it is “good to the last drop.”

On August 1, 1928, after the Cheek-Neal Company sold its assets to the Postum Company, the company changed its name to the Maxwell House Products company. But later, it changed its name again and this time, to General Foods Corporation.

General Foods Corporation became responsible for making new improvements in food packing. One of its significant developments was “vita-fresh” a new vacuum packing technique for coffee that General Foods Corporation later used on Maxwell House coffee in 1931.

A year later, General Foods Corporation purchased the Sanka Coffee Corporation and started making the instant coffee version of the Maxwell House coffee. In 1942, the U.S. armed forces received their coffee provisions with the Maxwell House coffee mark on them.

In 1950, roughly three years after the launch of the Sanka caffeine-free instant coffee, General Foods Corporation introduced a new and improved formula of Maxwell House coffee, which uses “flavor buds” to enhance the taste.

With the emergence of commercial coffee makers some time in the 1970s, General Foods Corporation also released the Maxwell House coffee (A.D.C.). In doing so, it became the first company to eve release a nationally available brand of coffee that is especially ground, blended, and roasted for use in automatic drip coffee makers.

General Foods Corporation soon joined with Kraft, Inc. to form Kraft General Foods, the largest food company in the U.S. In 1990, the Maxwell House coffee had its 100th anniversary. In line with this joyous celebration, it launched its 1892 coffee and introduced its Lite 50% Reduced Caffeine Coffee. The result was a rich, full flavor regular coffee that coffee lovers drink but with only half the caffeine.

In 2004, Maxwell House coffee presents its Café Collection coffee pods made from 100% premium Arabica beans. The pods are custom designed for the single serve home brewer, a development that represents the biggest home brewing innovation in three decades.

A survey carried out by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in 2005 revealed that 91% of organisations believe there is a direct link between leadership skill development and business performance, with 65% believing there is a shortage of effective leaders in the UK.Many forward-thinking organisations already recognise that investing in leadership development training is the key to delivering sustainable improvements in competitiveness and business performance, with both tangible and intangible benefits.Leadership development integral part of training for ReservistsAs well as being one of the areas which employers value most, along with self-confidence, initiative and adaptability, leadership is notoriously difficult to provide training for. Yet the intensive training undertaken by all Reservists results in the development of transferable skills and qualities in precisely these areas, making Reservists a huge asset to their civilian employer. In October 2005, a team of leading business academics identified poor leadership as one of the top five key weaknesses in business management. In contrast, the same study’s research amongst Reservists and its review of Reserve training identified the following competencies as the most widely developed by Reserve service: decision-making, motivating, communicating, managing risk, inspiring, involving others, team building, planning and managing conflict. All of these are essential elements in the development of good leadership skills.96% of employers say Reservists develop good leadership skillsSimilarly, employers of members of the Reserve Forces have consistently identified leadership qualities, teamwork skills and self-confidence as three areas where Reserve service adds value to their business or organisation; with 96% of the employers of Reservists saying that employees’ leadership is developed through service in the Reserve Forces.Reservists are skilled, clear-thinking individuals, who are prepared to learn, which is why an increasing number of employers recognise the unique benefits of employing Reservists. In acknowledgement of the great personal sacrifice and commitment made by Reservists, and the benefits their training brings to their civilian employment, SaBRE is campaigning for all UK businesses to pledge their support by signing the Statement of Employer Support. Over 100 companies have already given their public backing for their current or future employment of members of the Reserve Forces.
